SemIndia to Set Up US$3 Bln Chip Factory in India
December 02, 2005
SemIndia, a consortium of overseas Indians, recently announced it plans to invest about US$3 billion in a semiconductor plant in India. Construction on the plant, for which the consortium has not yet selected a location, will start in 2006, and production is expected to commence in 2007 or 2008. The plant will manufacture chips using 65nm and 90nm technologies, and the chips will be aimed at the Indian market. The Indian government, which has been trying for some time to attract international semiconductor makers to establish production sites in India, will invest in the project. AMD stated that it will transfer microprocessor technology to the consortium, and that it might take a stake in the project. The US company will also cooperate with SemIndia in marketing the chips in India.
